The Dirty Dozen & The Clean 15

By Thursday, 27 March 2014 Food & Drink, Health & Fitness

It sounds like the title of a bad movie, but it isn’t. These are the names of two rather useful lists put together by a US environmental group*.

The ‘Dirty Dozen’ lists the dozen or so fruit and veg that you that you should categorically avoid like the plague UNLESS you are eating them organically.  If you do this – and eat normal, non-organic fruit and veg the rest of the time – you will reduce your exposure to pesticide residues by a whopping 80% (and also presumably save a bunch of cash by not having to buy everything organic).

The ‘Clean 15’, on the other hand, lists the non-organic fruit and veg LEAST contaminated by pesticide use; eat as much of them as you can.

The Art of Eating Sushi

By Tuesday, 25 March 2014 Food & Drink, Health & Fitness, Restaurant Reviews

Weekends are usually a time when I chow down all manner of food that I have worked extremely hard to avoid over the course of the working week. Except sushi, a weekend or weekday pleasure that isn’t at all guilty.

My restaurant of choice is the rather upmarket Nogawa at the Concorde Hotel which puts Sushi Tei firmly in its place. This is the real deal, with flappingly fresh fish flown in daily from Japan. It is darned expensive should you veer off their lunchtime set menu though (make sure you don’t, would be my advice).

Changmoh Beauty: ThisWorks Perfect Legs

By Wednesday, 19 March 2014 Beauty, Online Shopping

I was given this miracle tube by Bon Bon Girl who blogs over at I Love Bon Bons. She’s generally pretty good on her beauty recommendations and often buys things that I wouldn’t. This being one of them.

The whole idea behind Perfect Legs is to transform your pasty pins with a subtle, temporary, golden glow whilst also correcting any skin imperfections. It’s essentially a sort of make up for legs.

Teck Sing and the Mind-Blowing Chicken

Last time I checked, Johor Bahru was not listed in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s recent global survey as being one of the most expensive cities to live in. On the basis that neighbouring Singapore has reportedly overtaken Toyko in terms of its cost of living, JB is now, if it wasn’t before, a thoroughly useful place to go to.

I pop over the border sporadically, to stock up on all manner of things that cost at least 50% less than they do here in Sing, including contact lenses, reflexology and…yes, really…herbal chicken.

Giveaway: Seed & Bean Organic Chocolate

By Wednesday, 12 March 2014 Brit Stuff, Food & Drink, Online Shopping, Shop Local

A square or two of dark chocolate after lunch is my guilty secret. As it’s dark, I feel I can justify it more easily than if the sugar content was higher (who am I kidding, it just means I can eat twice as much).

There are, though, a few ground rules to my chocolate scoffing: it obviously it has to taste great; if it’s organic, so much the better but taste is my main barometer. It also has to contain at least 60% cocoa solids, preferably 70%. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, it can’t have been made for the Asian or Australian market as I hate the anti-melting additives they slip in, giving it entirely the wrong texture.
