A day at the races: Cheltenham Festival 2015

If there was ever an antidote to Singapore city living and tropical heat, this is probably it. Cheltenham Festival is not a music festival or a weekend of jazz; nope, The Festival is arguably the finest jump racing in the British sporting calendar.

Ascot – which is flat racing – is of a similar calibre (read about last summer’s Ascot trip here) but in terms of what to wear, Cheltenham is strictly country attire. DO NOT be confused; leave the chiffon, heels and any exquisite, over-the-top millinery in the cupboard. And don’t even think about wearing black.

Nille’s famous mustard & dill sauce

By Thursday, 12 March 2015 Food & Drink, My Holidays, Recipes, Travel

After a stroll to the water’s edge, just as the sun was sinking yesterday evening, we turned for home and made dinner.

The view across the water in southern Sweden where we are staying

Without further a-do, here is the recipe for a traditional Swedish sauce that is positively life-changing when eaten alongside some home-cured gravadlax…it also transforms store-bought gravadlax and perks up cold seafood no end.

I even love it slathered on a toasted rye and smoked salmon sandwich (my breakfast this morning).

Sweden: sky, supermarkets and sandy beaches

By Wednesday, 11 March 2015 Food & Drink, My Holidays, Travel

I am writing this post from a windswept but beautiful coastal town of Simrishamn in Sweden. It feels like a deliciously random place to be and is surprisingly beautiful, even this early in the year when the trees are still bare.

I am not here to visit Sweden though, I am here to see a dear friend who happens to now live here. We arrived late last night, from Singapore, in darkness – my favourite time to arrive somewhere new for the simple fact that when you wake up the next morning, it feels like you have been teleported.

Before dinner at Bloom in the Park this evening, I had just two demands for my first day: a walk on a windswept, deserted, white sandy beach – all of five minutes drive away – and a trip to the local supermarket. Your own supermarket may be excruciatingly dull, but go to one in another country and it’s a different experience entirely. (I feel the same with pharmacies – especially French ones.) Anyone with me?

Shanghai Tangs…but a tenth of the price

When Janet approached me with a view to running something on this site, I was sceptical. She makes great jade jewellery from her scrubbed kitchen table at her home up near Upper Bukit Timah; she sells it very reasonably too…but her website lets her down and doesn’t do her polished pieces much justice at all.

If you can’t see beyond this, let’s say goodbye now. If you can, and are intrigued, let me tell you a little bit more.

Pancake Day

By Friday, 20 February 2015 Brit Stuff, Festivals, Food & Drink

I was thrilled to have managed to organise a pancake party earlier this week. Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day, was just a few days ago and always creeps up on me, unannounced in my online calendar. Year upon year I always say how I wish I’d got my act together sooner and organised a dinner party featuring nothing else but the humble pancake.

Well, this year I managed it. We had two pancake stations at the end of the table; think Ritz Carlton buffet-style with *slightly* worse decor.
