Just in case you need any more convincing to become a regular Changmoh reader, *winks* I have a piece in this week’s Telegraph about the taxi uncles of Singapore being the best cultural guides to the city.
I write for them every now and again but it was this particular story that reconnected me with a friend, Clare Pannell, who recently had the most amazing taxi experience: she gave birth in one on the way to Mount Elizabeth Hospital. The taxi uncle was beside himself. Not with anger, as you might imagine, but with joy at the ‘good luck’ a new life shooting across the leatherette seats of his brand new motor would give him. They are both still in regular contact with each other, which is rather special.
Clare also happens to design cards. When I popped over to see her and have a snuggle with the new bundle, she showed me her latest: a postcard with the iconic image of a taxi and the name of her son below it. What could be more perfect?
Her company is called Clare Pannell Designs and she started it about a year ago with the aim of selling reasonably priced cards that were, at the same time, good quality. She is able to design bespoke creations or you can buy a variety of designs from her stock collection.
I am obsessed with card thicknesses (correspondence cards and invitations in particular – I know, I know, clearly not enough to do) and hate it when they’re too light and flimsy. I am pleased to report that everything in her range is at least 300gsm – or more, upon request.
She does lovely contemporary correspondence cards, (name and address at the very top of the card on the reverse; a print on the front, instead of having it plain as is traditional) and has a very popular line in children’s ‘thank you’ notes. Clare can also make change of address cards or postcards or, in fact, pretty much anything else you might want.
There are over 30 new designs, including a London theme (of which the black taxi card, above, is a good example).
Clare Pannell Designs are available in Tango Mango in Tanglin Mall and at Cluny Court’s Groovy Gifts. They are also available online.
Prices vary according to how bespoke and individual you chose to make your card, but prices start from $60 for a box of 50 cards, each with their own envelope.
Enjoyable piece! Taxi drivers can make your day
