We were taken here last time Milly was in town. As previously mentioned, we are always taken to incredible places as soon as she’s in our midst.
This time is was the Teochew clan club, (I mean, how cool does that sound?) the Chui Huay Lim Club, hidden away just behind Newton Circus. When you say clan club I think of a ropey old shack of a place. Wipe that image from your mind. If you could choose which clan to join (I know that’s not quite how it works; I’m guessing that Teochew origins are probably a prerequisite)….this would be it.
Uber sleek and seriously smart both inside and out, it’s some of the best chinese food we’ve ever had. It’s all Teochew in style (obviously) but I’m not sure I’m such an expert that I can tell it apart from Cantonese cuisine. Basically it’s delicious and everything we had was fresh, beautifully cooked and subtly flavoured. Teochews are big on soups, so order some, just to look like you know what you are up to. No membership is needed to eat here, just a desire to eat properly authentic, and properly delicious, Chinese food.
(CHLC has both a coffee shop and a restaurant. We ate at the restaurant.)
Just off Newton Circus, it’s at 190 Keng Lee Road; T: (+65) 6253 0111
Other really authentic, no-angmoh-go restaurants that I love also include Por Kee and Westlake.
