Neighbourhood Watch: The Bukit Batok Blow Dry

By Changmoh • Wednesday, 17 September 2014 • Beauty, More Dash than Cash, My Edits, Shop Local

Eileen and I met when she ran a hair dressing salon at Ghim Moh; she did a roaring trade in very reasonable, beautifully executed blow dries. Cost Centre #1 (aka my oldest child) has just started at a new school in the wilds of Bukit Batok…and guess who’s relocated a stone’s throw from the Dulwich College school gates?* Eileen and her Creative Beauty Salon.

The scoop: blow dries are the cheapest I think I have ever come across. Today I paid $10 for a wash and blow that included a proper, five+ minute in-chair head massage. In fact, I am typing this while she’s doing it.

I quite a fan of bringing my own bottles of shampoo and conditioner along whenever I go for a neighbourhood blowout but, more often then not, forget to and leave home without them. Dulwich mummies, this one’s for you: if you are keen on becoming a regular – otherwise there’s not much point – Eileen will hang on to any bottles for you. Just remember to write your name on them in marker pen before handing them over.  What’s even more exciting is that I have persuaded her – if there is enough demand – to open up at 830am to wash and blow post-drop off mothers.

Her salon is quite deep within the HDB complex which means that she hardly gets any walk-in trade. Her pricing is excellent because she’s only really dealing with regulars.

There is a kway lapis shop directly opposite. Pop in and snap some up on your way home. It will keep for months in the freezer – pre-slice it first – and you can then whip it out for any playdates/coffee drop-ins.

The reason for my blow dry? Not that I need one at this price, but I am off to Eden Hall this evening for an art exhibition in celebration of Grand Prix Season Singapore, organised and co-hosted by Icon gallery. I think I can pretty much guarantee that no one there with half decent hair will have paid as little as I have for mine…but then again, hopefully, no one will be able to tell either (although His Excellency Antony Phillipson is a Changmoh reader…).

Why the strange name? Changmoh is an amalgamation of the words Chinese & 'Angmoh' (local speak for Caucasian should you be reading this in a country other than SG) // I'm an English girl living in Singapore and love the local way of life so much that I actually think I’m half Chinese. Maybe even three-quarters // Freelancer writer, author and editor ... you read it here first.
