Rocking Place for Dinner: Bedrock

By Changmoh • Friday, 10 February 2012 • Food & Drink, Restaurant Reviews

I always think of this restaurant as being a bit like J Sheekey’s in London. Not because the food it serves is remotely similar but because it’s over priced yet still fabulous and a lovely place to come with literally anyone.

We were here this week for a work/social dinner and everyone loved it.  I am never sure where the best place to go is in terms of people’s dietary requirements…do they eat meat/don’t they? –  you’re not always furnished with a lot of foodie facts on the people you are going to be entertaining.

Bedrock

Amazingly, even though this place is rated for its meat, steaks in particular, the sides are so good that any veggies who suddenly spring themselves on you will not be disappointed.

The tomahawk steak is pure table theatre, with its huge Flintstone-style bone, and fun to share (you need to be a minimum of four).  The ribeye steaks and tenderloins, served slap bang straight on to a piping hot slab of slate which acts as your plate, are genuinely (or seem to be at the time anyway) worth the $70+ price tag.

Starters are an event in themselves although you can skimp and do without as their make-it-yourself garlic pitta is delicious, and they give it to you anyway and keep bringing it.

The slivers of iberico ham, carved from the enormous leg that you can’t fail to spot on the counter-top on your way in, is fantastic, as is the roasted-in-the-box-Camembert.  Side wise (can you tell I have tried nearly all of them?) I love the truffle mash topped with a tiny bit of crispy seaweed instead of the usual parsley.

The French beans and asparagus are good too and, after all, you need something green to make you feel just a little bit healthy (the creamed spinach is way too creamy for my taste and the fries are good but ordinary).

The only pudding I have ever had any success with here is the coffee flavoured creme brûlée which they light at the table and really is worth the calories. The rest of the puds are, sadly, of the take-it-or-leave-it variety. (I am normally a bit of a creme brûlée purist but the coffee flavour really does work well. It’s massive though, so one is enough to share between three people).

God…after a re-read it sounds like this is a place to take someone if you want to kill them off with a thrombosis.  Avoid too many carbs though, delete pudding and eat a lot of veggies…and you are not doing too badly, or so I tell myself (and skip the starters as you really don’t need them). My all time favorite restaurant in Singapore I think.

    The Chinese Angmoh
Why the strange name? Changmoh is an amalgamation of the words Chinese & 'Angmoh' (local speak for Caucasian should you be reading this in a country other than SG) // I'm an English girl living in Singapore and love the local way of life so much that I actually think I’m half Chinese. Maybe even three-quarters // Freelancer writer, author and editor ... you read it here first.
