Changmoh Beauty: The Wonders of a Pre-Shampoo

By Changmoh • Monday, 8 April 2013 • Beauty

My hair looks terrible at the moment. I choose to blame this turn of events entirely on the humidity (nothing to do with the highlights then). Blow dries may fix things temporarily – at Ghim Moh market they cost me just $16 (£8) which is not even guilt-inducing – but to stop looking like a frizz-head for longer, my latest find that actually seems to work is Burt’s Bees Avocado Butter Pre-Shampoo.  Slap it onto wet hair and do something for about 15 minutes before washing it as normal.

Bad hair day

A DIY clingfilm wrap/plastic bag (I’m a classy girl) is, in hindsight, very much recommended to stop drips running down your back while it all sinks in and works its magic.  It’s unfortunately a rather disgusting and potentially clothes-staining colour.

Avo pre-shampoo hair magic

Key ingredients are avocado and olive oil.  Before you say it, yes, I know…there are endless homemade haircare recipes using an avocado and various cooking oils.  The thing is, if I do ever mash up a soft, ripe avocado I generally end up eating it.  On toasted brown bread with a sprinkling of fleur de sel.  For lunch.  This tubed version is easier and US$8.99 (S$11/£5.80) for 123g, cheaper too.

Sephora carries a pretty good selection of Burt’s Bees products here in Singapore but the products stocked do change regularly (part of the stores ever-evolving beauty). In other words, it’s a Stateside secret…if you suffer from the same problem I do, get someone you know over there to send you some!

While updating this post when I migrated my content over to the new changmoh site, I spotted that amazon.com sell this and will deliver to SG

My hair is a disaster in Singapore’s humidity, but I have discovered Brazilian blowdrys. Ridiculously expensive but the results are amazing.

I will have to try. Thanks. It’s all the wretched baby hair I have since cost centre #2 was born. Where do you go for your Brazilian blow? It’s a much better option than semi-perm straightening which kills your hair from all account and looks great after the first go, then gradually less and less so the more you do it xx

Cedric at Le Pappillon is wonderful (http://offmytits-jo.blogspot.com/2012/07/a-new-hair-journey.html) but love the idea of Berts Bees too…….

Thank you for sharing. Loved reading your post on your straightening experience!

I love Burt’s Bees. Does this work for thin and fine hair? I’m cursed with both.

I have heard about the Brazilian blowdry from my sister and I was looking for a place that does it here in SG that is highly recommended.

It does… I have fine hair but just a lot of it. Give it a whirl. Check out a few of the other comments on this post re Brazilian blow dries. Le Pappillon is recommended among others x

That’s great! I will get my sister to ship me the pre-shampoo from the US and check out Le Pappillon.

Thanks for the great tip – frizzy hair around the forehead is making look ridiculous, eccentric and a total untamed mess. Did you find this at Sephora at ION? Hopefully so!

    • Changmoh Wednesday, 10 April 2013 at 10:49 AM

So sorry but I bought it in the States when I was there recently. Check in ION’s Sephora as they do stock Burt’s Bees and so may currently carry it…

The Chinese Angmoh
Why the strange name? Changmoh is an amalgamation of the words Chinese & 'Angmoh' (local speak for Caucasian should you be reading this in a country other than SG) // I'm an English girl living in Singapore and love the local way of life so much that I actually think I’m half Chinese. Maybe even three-quarters // Freelancer writer, author and editor ... you read it here first.
